A new study has demonstrated that being exposed to particulate matter (a type of air pollutant) has been correlated with hair loss, as particulate matter reduces amounts of proteins necessary for retaining and growing hair. This protein reduction tended to increase as the amount of pollutants increased. Particulate matter is the result of the combustion of gasoline, coal, and other fossil fuels, but although particulate matter seems to cause hair loss, its effects on human skin are yet to be discovered. Even though excessive worrying about the ill effects of pollutants may be harmful, it is still fascinating to consider the possible effects of pollutants on human health.

Key Takeaways:

  • A study has shown that there is a correlation between hair loss and exposure to particulate matter.
  • Particulate matter is the result of the combustion of gasoline, coal, and other fossil fuels.
  • Excessive worrying about pollutants is probably harmful but it is still fascinating to consider the medical ramifications of pollutants.

“new research shows that air pollution has significant effects for another (and just as important, in my opinion) component of skin care: our scalps”
